Feeding therapy sessions are designed around identifying the reason(s)- medical, sensory or behavioral- why your child is struggling to successfully nourish their bodies by mouth and then targeting strategies to adequately meet your child's nutrition and hydration needs. Whether the challenge is transitioning from bottle to solids, handling textures, coordinated breath and swallow, mechanical management of solids, weaning from a feeding tube, or anything in between; our exceptional therapists will guide you through moving forward toward success.
A typical session may be 30 minutes to one hour depending on the child's need and insurance coverage.
You, as the parent, will be included in the sessions most of the time to understand and see first hand the strategies that are working so that you are able to replicate those at home.
Parents are normally asked to bring foods to the session and the therapist will be able to help guide the selection of foods. The food items will need to be a mix of preferred/safe food items and non preferred/new food items. The new and non preferred food items will be introduced in a heirarchy approach to ensure success. For our littlest patients, a feeding therapy session would include trialing of different bottles, bottle nipples and oral motor skills.
